Richard Gabriel has made available in PDF format the full text of his
book "Performance and Evaluation of Lisp Systems. Originally published
in 1985 by MIT Press, the book is the final report of a Lisp
performance study conducted by the author in the early 1980s.

The first part of the book provides some theoretical background, the
second presents the Lisp implementations used in the study, and the
third describes the benchmark suite that was used during the
study. The "Gabriel Benchmarks" described in the book are still in use
for benchmarking Unix systems.

Richard Gabriel is currently a Distinguished Engineer and chief
scientist of a research laboratory at Sun Microsystems. He is Sun's
Open Source expert and is also the president of the Hillside Group,
which is well known in the software patterns community. Gabriel has
been president and CTO at former Lisp vendor Lucid, Inc.
