The Linux desktop is here (SMH)

The Sydney Morning Herald reviews Xandros 2.0. "There is very little about Xandros which will raise the ire of a user - though one can complain that there are limited applications. But then, when all common tasks are looked after, why does one have to look any further? Those of an adventurous turn of mind can add new packages and play around as their knowledge of the system increases. About the only thing which I could fault was the absence of the best-known graphics program for Linux, the GIMP."

The Linux desktop is here (SMH)

I finally escaped from the Windoze nightmare and started using Xandros 1.0 in December of 2002. I was a very happy Xandros Linux user. I was amazed at how easy it was. Everything seemed logical and it made sense.

I had too much real work to do to play with it as much as I'd like. I'm running my small company on Xandros, and I use it A LOT. My PC is on 24/7. On the rare occasions I'm not using it, it's analyzing SETI@home data. It gets a real workout. I constantly run multiple large applications, including GIMP.

I'm pretty sure The GIMP was installed with Xandros 2.0, but I might have installed it with the one-click Xandros Networks installation. Installing, upgrading and uninstalling open source software will be a real treat for anyone coming from the Windoze world.

I've been a fairly typical Windoze refugee. I use Xandros, and it just works. I was glad to be rid of the crashes, DLL hell, registry rot and gross lack of security that have made Windoze the OS it is today.

I upgraded to Xandros 2.0 when it became available, and it's just more of a good thing.

There are other good Linux desktop solutions emerging. Windoze is as dead as fried chicken. They know it, and there's nothing they can do about it. Bye bye monopoly. Hello consumer oriented software.

Now, we just need to repeal the Microsoft tax. We shouldn't be forced to buy WinXP to get a name brand notebook PC. But because of monopolistic marketing practices, Windoze is bundled with every PC sold by major PC OEMs, whether we want it or not. I'd hate to see how bad it'd be if the Department Of Justice hadn't won their antitrust case against Microsoft. I guess that's why the settlement is being called the Seattlement. Oh well, it's only prolonging the inevitable.
