German finance unit chooses Linux (News.com)

News.com is carrying a Reuters article on another European governmental shift toward Linux. "IBM said that the finance ministry department, which is responsible for paying public sector employees and for managing certain taxes, installed two large IBM mainframe computers that run both IBM's operating system and Linux." Of course, the article also carries the obligatory SCO paragraph.

Bit ironic that the article mentions the SCO suit, since this is one
customer who won't be hearing from SCO any time soon, by court order.

There's a cultural element, too. Europeans have an affinity for Linux because it was created by a Finn, Linus Torvalds. And the communitarian culture of the open-source movement strikes a chord with the political Left. "There's an attraction to a business model that is closer to utopian socialism," says Fran?ois Bancilhon, chief executive of Paris-based Linux software maker Mandrakesoft (MDKFF ), which sells and supports Linux software.
