FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NTT Joins OSDL World's largest telecommunications company joins Linux consortium to accelerate development of Linux for enterprise datacenters and carrier grade applications BEAVERTON, Ore. and TOKYO - February 3, 2004 - The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), a global consortium dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux, today announced that Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), the world's largest telecommunications company, has joined OSDL and will participate in the Lab's Data Center Linux and Carrier Grade Linux working group initiatives. NTT, a telecommunications giant that oversees a group of more than 430 companies with 200,000 employees in Japan and around the world, is joining OSDL to accelerate the development of Linux for enterprise computing. NTT's research and development arm, NTT research laboratories, will take the lead for the firm on open source software development to strengthen Linux for use as a major platform for enterprise computing. "NTT Laboratories plans to use open source software in enterprise computing systems and various applications," said Yuji Inoue, senior vice president of NTT. "Through these activities we contribute to open source software communities and the integrity of the information-sharing society. We are joining OSDL, which helps define features needed to improve the reliability and scalability of Linux, to contribute together as NTT group companies in establishing Linux as the computing platform for telecom carrier IT systems." NTT have been around for a very long time, and have fingers in many,
many pies. It'll be interesting to see what they do with this. Their
immediate plans seem straightforward:
When NTT talks about scalability, I think in terms of fractional
millions to multiple millions of machines. I can't wait to stand in front
of someone who's claiming that Linux won't scale...

It is good that international businesses join the developers. This way development of open source can be sponsored by the big users, without the overhead of normal software firms.

They employ four times as many people as my entire "home" region, and
fifty times as many as live in "my" shire.
That is *not* a small or harmless firm!
We are joining OSDL, which helps define features needed to
improve the reliability and scalability of Linux, to contribute together
as NTT group companies in establishing Linux as the computing platform for
telecom carrier IT systems.
