This is true, but I give them a little credit since they were the first platform-independent SQL server (as in, you didn't have to buy vendor-specific hardware with it). ;)

Larry Elison launched Oracle from IBM's System R papers even before IBM itself had a product. This 'merit' is more of a function of them not being hardware vendors, just like Microsoft in the OS field.
