Open-source shifts spell an end for UnitedLinux (ZDNet)

ZDNet notes the end of UnitedLinux. "The shutdown marks the end of an ambitious effort to attract more hardware and software partners, standardize Linux, and boost research and development. Instead, it was OSDL--a more neutral coalition in the Linux industry and the employer of Linux leader Linus Torvalds--that succeeded where UnitedLinux failed."

Of course, I'm sure that having the letters S, C, and O attached, in that order, to UnitedLinux didn't help it any.

Hey look! That's what the article says. It's encouragingly clueful, in fact.

I wonder what rant Darl will issue about this?

sue! (loss of business, slander of title, and mis-use and/or mis-appropriation of IP - among others)

Indeed - it's amusing in a way. SCO refused to leave UnitedLinux, so UL basically dismantled itself around SCO, leaving them standing in the cold, screaming like spoiled children.

Darl has obviously decided that modern civilisation will end unless everyone in the world gives him money for "his" IP, so who knows how much more hyperbolic he could get. The sad thing his, what has he personally given to the world?

Well, he's certainly keeping a lot of lawyers, paralegals and legal secretaries employed :)

(Posted Jan 23, 2004 18:17 UTC (Fri) by 87C751) (Post reply) The whole premise of the SCO venture has left credibility so far behind that the only remaining interest for me is much like the compulsion to look at the 4-car pileup on the freeway. A morbid fascination with disaster, but not much more

Yep, that pretty much sums up the whole thing.

I actually find that unlikely; if he had a lot of laywers I doubt he'd be using his brother; if he had paralegals, I would have expected more legal research in his arguments.

Ah, but don't forget all the legal professionals who other people have to employ because of these cretins :)

I'd expect something akin to a little boy stamping his feet at the edge of the playground and wailing that no one wants to play with him anymore.

To be honest, even the amusement factor in SCO's Quixotian quest is wearing thin. The whole premise of the SCO venture has left credibility so far behind that the only remaining interest for me is much like the compulsion to look at the 4-car pileup on the freeway. A morbid fascination with disaster, but not much more

Yes, it like the child with no friends who throws away a toy that that's no fun, only to
demand it back when some other children start playing with it.

I would have liked to read the article, but the ZDnet site crashes the browser (galeon). I did a wget on the site, passed the content through an html validator, and it was so full of errors it was hard to believe. I cannot even log on to zdnet to tell them about their abominable implementation.

I always thought that Ziff Davis was a collection of simple minded windows cheerleaders, but this is beyond the pale - talk about hiring professionals.
