XANDROS INTRODUCES NEW BUSINESS DESKTOP AS FULL-FEATURED WINDOWS ALTERNATIVE
Robust, Secure Linux Solution with 64-Bit Support & Bundled Star Office 7
Offers Most Compatible Windows Replacement Ever
(NEW YORK, LinuxWorld Expo) - Today Xandros, the leading developer of
easy-to-use Linux solutions for the desktop market, announced the Xandros
Business Desktop Operating System, the first in its new line of Xandros
Business Solutions designed to meet the demanding needs of enterprise
customers. The Xandros Business Desktop is a full-featured operating system
providing seamless connectivity with Windows networks. Based on Linux,
Xandros Desktop OS offers an affordable alternative to the Windows Operating
System, while delivering the security and stability essential to critical
business operations.
"Linux is clearly headed for the corporate desktop," said Sam Greenblatt,
senior vice president and chief architect of Computer Associates' Linux
Technology Group. "By delivering a Linux desktop solution that addresses
the needs of both end-users and corporate technology managers, Xandros has
demonstrated a clear understanding of what it will take to make this vision
a reality."
Offers Windows Active Directory and PDC authentication
The Xandros Business Desktop OS comes standard with a long list of
enterprise-class features. These include server-accessed network
connections through authentication against Windows Primary Domain
Controllers and Active Directory servers. It also supports domain
controller logon scripts, plus support for AMD Athlon 64-bit processors, SAP
and Citrix thin clients, IBM Terminal Emulators. The package is also
bundled with StarOffice 7 with full commercial support.
"The cross-platform compatibility allows integration of the Xandros Business
Desktop OS into an otherwise Windows-dominated environment. This allows
desktop-driven businesses such as financial or insurance firms to migrate to
Linux," said Dr. Frederick H. Berenstein, Xandros Chairman and CTO. "The
Xandros Business Desktop OS combines Xandros' award-winning Linux Desktop OS
with new features our business clients have been asking for. The result is a
robust and secure desktop operating environment that addresses the essential
needs of enterprises large and small."
Familiar look and feel
The graphical environment and clean, well-structured menus invite users to
get right to work and make it easy to find their favorite programs. The
office suite provides compatibility with Microsoft features and files, and
the Xandros File Manager makes it easy to drag and drop files, manage
folders and archives, access local partitions, share network resources, set
up printers, and perform numerous other tasks. Multiple virtual desktops
make it easy to organize open applications and switch among desktop tasks.
The Xandros Business Desktop will be available February 17 directly from
Xandros at www.xandros.com/shopping, as well as from software resellers. The
recommended retail price for Xandros Business Desktop is $129 per seat; with
volume pricing available as well as discounts for existing Xandros users.
XANDROS ANNOUNCES xDMS: FIRST ENTERPRISE DESKTOP MANAGEMENT SERVER
New Enterprise Server Simplifies Deployment and Management of Thousands of
Desktops, Including Competing Distributions
(NEW YORK, LinuxWorld Expo) - Xandros, the leading developer of easy-to-use
Linux solutions for the desktop market, today announced the Xandros Desktop
Management Server (xDMS). This server-based suite is the first total
deployment and management solution for Linux desktops in a secure enterprise
environment.
With xDMS, software administrators can easily set up their software
repositories and deploy customized desktop configurations to thousands of
networked desktops. The thoroughly integrated graphical application can be
used to manage the deployment of Xandros Desktop OS 2.0, as well as to
manage the configurations and deploy updates for other competing Linux
installations.
"The same pioneering ease of use that Xandros brought to the Linux desktop
has now been applied to the deployment and management of desktops
themselves," said Dr. Frederick H. Berenstein, Xandros Chairman and CTO.
"While we believe that Xandros is the distribution of choice, we are
providing our enterprise clients with complete freedom to deploy any
distributions and packages they choose."
Easy to Use, Yet Powerful
The Desktop Management Server provides an easy-to-use set of graphical
tools, which allows departmental desktop administrators to perform
sophisticated tasks that formerly required retention of expensive Linux
networking experts. They can easily set up custom software repositories
from multiple sources and quickly deploy and manage groups of networked PCs.
All of this is done in a secure environment with all information kept behind
a corporate firewall, not on a remote Internet server.
xDMS also lets administrators set up a single PC with the software and
settings they need (including custom user profiles, desktop icons, screen
resolution, network and printer shares), then take a snapshot of that
"golden PC" to remotely deploy the configuration onto systems across the
network.
Other features include: SSL encryption for all transmissions within the
LAN, one click updates of software repositories, and remote scheduled
deployment of automatic software updates and security patches
