The speed of 3.2 is pretty amazing. When you combine it with a 2.6
preemptible kernel things just fly.

I agree. I still get good interactive response when compiling things with -j6 on Kernel 2.6.1 and KDE-3.2. My system load will be > 5 and web-browsing, etc. are definitely usable. This with a PIII-700/512M.

If you have any spare boxes lying around, distcc is really good at compiling KDE releases if you can't get binary packages, BTW.
