In late 2003, the lead developers of two GNU/Linux Desktop distributions
started talks on common design goals and the problems faced by smaller
desktop vendors. Limited resources, limited developers, limited users
and a high level of demand were just a few of the problems. Their
solution was to merge their resources and create a new distribution
aimed at their common target market. From these efforts Ares Desktop was
born.

"In order for J.A.M.D <http://www.jamd-linux.com/> and Blue Linux
<http://www.bluelinux.org> to reach their target goals, major focus has
to be placed on the desktop. Joining Blue Linux with J.A.M.D. and
bringing other developers into the mix seems very logical" said Matt
Jezorek developer and founder of Blue Linux.

The Ares core team hopes to start a trend of smaller desktop vendors
joining together to create strong, powerful and free desktop GNU/Linux
distributions. One of the biggest problems faced by users making the
switch to GNU/Linux is that most free distributions are not developed
with the new user in mind. The distributions that are, often do not
provide a free download or have a limited version; we plan to change
that. Design goals of Ares Desktop are to provide end users with the
best "out of the box" experience and to remain 100% free.

Ares Desktop is a free operating system for computers aimed at the
educational, home and small business markets.

Some of the features users can expect from Ares Desktop will be:

      * Fully integrated desktop based on the popular KDE environment.
      * Complete office suite and personal information management tools
      * Internet ready and preloaded with popular Internet applications
      * Complete set of functional multimedia applications
      * Strong focus on quality and stability.
