Visiting the New World of Linux Sound and Music Software (Linux Journal)

Dave Phillips offers a couple of suggestions in the Linux Journal for people wanting to get started with Linux audio. "Although certain folks might grumble about how much better things were in the Old Days, I must admit that I've become quite happy about easier installation routines, the apt system and colorful work environments. Performance is what really counts, and tuning a system for peak audio performance is a non-trivial task. Planet CCRMA and AGNULA do indeed remove most of the aches and pain suffered while trying to untangle the complexities of kernel latency, JACK, ALSA, the LADSPA plugins and so forth."

Short version: In the bad old days it was hard to make Linux ready for
audio work, but now two distributions make it easy to install an
audio-ready Linux system.

Brief listings of some included apps, and some low-level info about
low-latency and other kernel issues, but otherwise no real info about
actually using these distros (and the apps they contain) for audio work.
JACK and ALSA are mentioned, but no info about why they're useful. Also
very little info useful for those who want to use their existing distro
for audio work.

Well sure. But this is only the second issue of the column. I imagine that next month, he'll
write about the exciting world of Jack. Readers might not be able to keep up with him if
they haven't even gotten the software installed.

OK, but it would still be nice if this column had gone into usage some
more. This is as bad as any other distro review that stops after
installation and grabbing an initial screenshot.

I just went back and read the previous column, and it looks like this guy
has a lot to offer. I just don't see it offered in this particular
column.
