Asia Loves Linux -- And Microsoft Scrambles (Business Week)

Business Week looks
at increasing Linux use in Asia. "Discontent with Windows --
and enthusiasm for Linux -- are increasingly common in Asia these
days. Although Microsoft still rules the desktop and racks up healthy
server operating-system sales, open-source software is winning fans across
the region. Government officials see Linux as a means of cutting costs --
systems using it run as much as 70% cheaper than Windows -- and priming
their local software industries."

Someone needs to read about actual TCO from the horse's mouth (or possibly slightly anterior...) or at least /. http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/facts/default.asp ! Seems perfectly clear to me that FUD will soon have it's very own character in most, if not all, Asian dialects...and not a minute too soon. Wasn't it the plan to let them copy all the software they wanted until it was everywhere and then turn it off and make them pay to turn it back on again? The actual quote escapes me, but the idea derives directly from Sir Bill's own words....

The last paragraph of the article reads:
"Microsoft has started sharing parts of its code with government programmers in China, Hong Kong, and elsewhere. That allows them to write in extra security and "gives them peace of mind," says Mirchandani."
Mirchandani is Asia-Pacific president for Microsoft. Could we find a better advocate for Free Software?
