Commercial use of GPL software

Perhaps this will take some views at this late date through its inclusion in the timeline...

This is nothing new: Wyse created an embedded device some 5 years or more ago called the
Winterm 5535, which used a Linux kernel, FVWM95 (by inspection) and an X server that had been
modified also to be a VNC server.

That's a combination that's very desirable, but despite repeated attempts, I never managed to
get ahold of anyone who would even admit that they'd heard of the GPL, much less was willing to
comment on the release of the code -- or even answer my email.

The device is now discontinued... but tis' only this last year that distributions have started
nibbling at the very useful idea of an Xserver which can be seen both locally *and* remotely
(without having to run *2* Xservers per user)... which, ironically, might possibly be due to
the inclusion of this facility in Win XP. (IMHO)

And of course, SnapGear's work to complete the usability of PoPToP... which they did *after*
porting everything to the Coldfire processor, and the patches are pretty much useless to
others. I like Snap's products, but Miles' response on the issue (published in these pages a
couple years back) still doesn't sit that well with me.
