2004 Predictions (San Jose Mercury News)

Dan Gillmor mentions Linux and open-source software in his predictions for 2004 article in the San Jose Mercury News. "Ardent proponents of Linux and other open-source software will (a) stave off insidious legal and political moves designed to kill the genre; (b) make dramatic inroads on desktop computers, not just servers and embedded devices; (c) inspire people in other kinds of endeavors to use community-building projects to advance larger goals; (d) proclaim that their way is the only way."

I vote for A, B, and C. I vote against D.

(d) has been going on for some time now, so it's a pretty safe prediction that it will continue.

...probably because, when you give the M$ folks any quarter at all, they assume that means you're about to convert back to their religion/amend your ways.

I know; there are things I like about Microsoft Access, and all in all I think it's one of the coolest pieces of software I've ever used.

But when I tell that to a Microsoftian, they assume that means my former comments about Linux were some kind of wayward behavior that is about to change.

...and if I ever suggest that a similar program might appear in the free-software community, or that there are programs in FLOSS that I like just as much as I like Access....Well! Heretic!

Quite true...

And THEN they have the temerity to turn around and complain about how the FLOSS movements are "pseudo-religious" and "evangelical"!

True, we have some people who do exhibit elements of that behavior, but I like to think that most of us are sensible enough to direct our religious devotion to things worthy of it, and leave computers to rationality and science. And, of course, ethics.

Not really. Unless you equal "is in many cases the best way" with "is the only way".

It's sorta obvious really. People who don't think developing Open Source is the best way to do it, won't do it. (Why people consider it "best" varies. Some for political reasons. Some for practical reasons. Some for altruistic reasons. Most some sort of mix of the above.)

If "any way" were the only way, then evoution would not be possible!...
And Open-Source would not had happened!...
