Use of patented code in the kernelUse of patented code in the kernelPosted Dec 25, 2003 12:33 UTC (Thu) by arcticwolf (guest, #8341)Parent article: Use of patented code in the kernel Wouldn't it be possible to gather those implementations of patented algorithms etc. in a patch of their own that would then be made available independently from the main kernel, like it was done with the cryptographic kernel patch? That way, the code in question would not have to be in the mainline kernel, but everyone who wanted to use it (having a license, being in a country where the patent is not valid, being in a country where software cannot be patented in general or just plain not caring about the patent) could.
