White Box Enterprise Linux 3.0 is now available for immediate download via
BitTorrent or ftp. Having gone through two widely downloaded Release
Candidates with only minor problems detected, White Box is ready for prime
time.

Q: What is White Box Enterprise Linux?

A: Take the freely available SRPMS for Red Hat's RHEL3, strip out the
trademarks required by the license and some other obvious references, go
through a few compile/test cycles and you get White Box. In other words:

Same Penguin, only delivered in a plain White Box!

Q: So is it really the same?

A: Well more like 99%. RHEL3 depends on RHN for errata and of course that
doesn't work without the genuine RHEL3 and a support contract. So yum and
up2date were imported from Fedora and modified a bit so that yum becomes
the primary method of package distribution. Of the 669 original source
packages in RHEL3, 21 are modified to some degree, 1 replaced and 1 added.

Q: Should I consider White Box Enterprise Linux?

A: If you are running Red Hat Linux 7.3, 8.0 or 9.0, watching the end of
life deadline approach and still wondering what you should do, White Box
might be for you. Red Hat is offering you a choice between an ever
churning series of .0 developer quality releases from Fedora or returning
to the days of per seat licenses and audits but with a support contract.
Both have their audience, but left a wide group in the middle out in the
cold. Now White Box offers you the third choice they discontinued: a
stable release with a long errata window, but with zero formal support.

White Box Enterprise Linux 3.0 released

I am glad to see that White Box is coming along nicely. Seems to me that that White Box does what RedHats current linux offerings cannot do and that is be freely availible. More power to White Box. I am running Fedora, but am already tiring of the thought of endless development quality releases.I am yearning for the good old standard free Red Hat that was stable and had a longer development cycle. I really hope and pray that RedHat has not ruined their best chance at the desktop market, and in the small business market for that matter. I own stock in RedHat and don't want to see them fail, but they seem to be trying to do just that. In fact on the Fedora IRC channel one should never DARE to bring up any type of idea, or constructive criticism that runs counter to the Redhat line because RedHat will not allow it. If anything from mp3 support to other issues comes up the folks in charge revert to the Redhat stance on the non-gpled software, drivers, etc. You see, I joined the development and testing mailing lists for Fedora, and have tried to see just exactly how the Fedora community development was going to work. In truth all of the decisions are made by Redhat.

The community has little to no say at all in what our "community" supported Fedora looks like. So in essence, unless Fedora is truly given to the community, it will remain sub-par in my view. That makes me and a lot of others sad. It could be better. It could have errata support for a year. It could be made into the best desktop linux build out there. I guess I am just angry at being belittled by RedHat employees while in the Fedora community channel. I think fedora has extremely poor community support and that it is going to bite RedHat on the hand. All I can say is go White Box!

I do like YUM though. It is a nice tool, although i wish it had a synaptic equivalent. A lot of Fedora is nice, just not the people who control it. The RedHat/Fedora folks in need to learn that they have allies in the open source community and that good community support is essential.

P.S: It does not please me to be doing this, so don't think i am just flaming. I know Redhat does a lot of good but they are not perfect and neither am I.

Except that if Redhat stops, White Box stops. Someone is supporting the costs of devel, which means White Box is leeching. Nothing wrong with that, but people like me who can afford to pay, get a warm fuzzy feeling supporting the people that make my software go 'round.

Well I should have stated that I personally bought every box set RedHat released from 6.0 to 9. I did support them.

No

If RH stops, WB can still keep going. The going would be rougher, but it can still keep going.

Anyone who has access to the LFS docs and a little time can keep a Linux distro going, be it their own or someone else's.

People forget that Linux started out as a "stone soup" project proposal on a Minix mailing list. Look where it is now. If people want something to happen and are willing to put in the effort, it will happen.

Call it leeching or whatever, I prefer to look at it as "parenting".

Turns out that WB 3.0 release has a few problems.
See the WB mailing list, and wait for the corrected
WB 3.0a release before trying to install...
