Israel accelerates free software migration (Register)

The Register reports that several departments in the Israeli government are evaluating Linux. "Writing for Israel's Ynet, Gal Mor reports that the Israeli Treasury has decided to walk away from the Government's contract with Microsoft. Signed two years ago, the contract expires this month, and the ministry is testing localized builds of Mandrake Linux."

Ahhhh... now I understand why the Israeli Finance Ministry hasn't been able to do anything about the "non-strike" strike -- now in its 70th day -- of workers in all the other government ministries that deal with the Israeli public: they're busy evaluating Linux!

It is good to know that someone in our government is finally doing something about rapacious Micro$oft. OTOH, anyone-and-everyone who has been "downsized" during the past 2-1/2 months cannot file for unemployment benefits, but that's not a problem -- people who have filed previously also don't get their checks, because the striking workers won't process them!

Ditto for registering real-estate and auto transactions, obtaining/renewing one's driver's license, gun permit, identity card, or passport (and the list goes on).

Moving to Linux will surely save the government money; but the real question is: will free software free the taxpayers?
