December Troubleshooters Magazine

The December issue of Troubleshooters is out, with a comprehensive GIMP tutorial and lots of other stuff. "If I were stranded on a desert island with only one graphical tool, I pray it would be Gimp. Gimp might not be easiest for specific applications, but it can do just about anything. This article gives an overview of a select few of Gimp's abilities. Gimp has MANY more abilities than discussed in this article."

OT: tv character generation

Posted Dec 16, 2003 3:49 UTC (Tue) by Baylink (subscriber, #755) [Link]

I'm a video guy, and notwithstanding the utter lack of genlock video cards for under $1500 (or
maybe it's not
notwithstanding that -- hard to tell what's the chicken and what's the egg) there's an almost
complete lack of decent character generator software for Linux.

Lots of things are nice (object orientation, filtering, scripting, etc), but *good* handling of
text -- both from an editability standpoint and from a fancy (preferably extensibly so)
rendering aspect -- is clearly paramount. I'm looking for something to use as a base and
extend, at least, and I've looked at the GIMP, Sodipodi, Sketch, that SVG Sodipodi fork I can't
remember the name of at the moment, and one or two more...

and nothing's even close.

Anyone laying around out there who's ever been near a broadcast CG, is familiar with that neck
of the Linux woods, and can chat a little with me about this?
