Vnunet covers a UK project
to send the Beagle 2 Mars Lander to the red planet. "In true British
low-budget fashion, a single Linux-based workstation at the Lander
Operations Control Centre (LOCC) is being used to send commands and receive
vital data from Beagle 2."

Someone should remind them that that's a form of distributing Linux, so they to have to include the source with any changes they've made. And they should kindly ask the martians to implement some patent encumbered code and return that to us, since on Mars I believe there are no software patents yet or any import/export restrictions on software, are there?

Maybe after I have checked out my various non-disclosure agreements I will give you the details, however to keep you going, both the Lander Operations Control Center at the UK's National Space Center, and the Lander Operations Planning Center at the Open University (think NASA Houston and JPL for the two control centers) use SuSe Linux workstations running European Space Agency software called SCOS 2000, which is a port of earlier versions which ran on Solaris. At approx. 0500 on Christmas day I will be sat at one of them, hopefully (!) unwrapping telemetry.
The Beagle 2 itself does not run Linux, so I hate to disapoint Hansl, but the Martians will have to submit their code back into the community !
Anyway, lets hope our Electronic warfare gadgets get us past the Martian Strategic Defence System, unlike the last NASA lander......... :-)

The Beagle 2 itself does not run Linux,

An 8 bit SPARC? Or are only 8 of the 32 bits hardened :-?
