Ironically I believe it was IBM...
The term FUD was coined by a former
employee Gene Amdahl about IBMs
marketing tactics.

Businesses can't be trusted. Always
remember the price of freedom is
constant vigilance. For those with
a longer memory this is all
deliciously ironic. I'd like to keep
Big Blue as an ally but like all
businesses they can turn at the drop
of a hat when their bottom line is
threatened. SCOX is just the latest
turncoat.

FUD: a living definition

True.
It bears noting, though, that ESR has found it necessary to acknowledge a hierarchy of evil in updating the definition of FUD maintained in the Jargon Files.
