It runs as a daemon and performs various actions when you hit hotkeys. Volume control is built in, and you can also run an arbitrary program. LinEAK also interfaces with XOSD to provide an on-screen display. It includes definitions for many popular keyboards, and has excellent documentation on how to add your own keyboard.
