Yeah, what's the deal with this? I've got an old Gateway Solo with all of these idiot keys on it. It's not that I need them or want them, but I've got them, and I can't find a way to use them.

Since this notebook doesn't have a physical volume control, I have to adjust the volume with my mouse through the taskbar. It would be nice if I could use the volume control keys above the keyboard -- especially the mute key.

Is there a way to add functionality to KDE's keyboard shortcuts?

(SUSE LINUX 9.0, KDE 3.1)

LinEAK

Try LinEAK. It runs as a daemon and performs various actions when you hit hotkeys. Volume control is built in, and you can also run an arbitrary program. LinEAK also interfaces with XOSD to provide an on-screen display. It includes definitions for many popular keyboards, and has excellent documentation on how to add your own keyboard.

Other fun applications are Hotkeys (DE independant and unnecessary, XML configuration) and Acme (for GNOME, easy to configure).

Try Klineakd or wait for KDE-3.2

Apart from the already recommended lineakd (with klineak, a KDE frontend!) I would recommend you to try KDE-3.2 where this functionality is supposedly merged into khotkeys.

Beta2 is due this week and should be very usable, because KDE is in deep freeze for over a month now.
