There is nothing wrong if people who start the project put their names on it as long as it doesn't create confusion or unnecessary connotations (e.g. McDonald's Linux or Paine Linux). Also, I think it's important to keep GNU as part of the name if Linux is used in the name. Linux is the name of the kernel, so GNU/Linux would indicate that it's not just the kernel. Alternatively, both GNU and Linux could be dropped to avoid this controversial issue. Possible names (just to illustrate for my words): Bruce GNU/Linux, FEOS (Free Enterprize Operating System).

Doing otherwise would be disrespectful to Debian GNU/Linux, on which the new distribution is going to be based. I don't have a stong opinion in the Linux vs GNU/Linux debate in general, but in this case the choice has already been made by Debian developers.
