Sun's JDS Rivals Windows, Office (eWeek)

eWeek takes a look at Sun's Java Desktop System. "In eWeek Labs' tests of the final build, we found Java Desktop System (formerly code-named Mad Hatter) approachable and functional, with design tweaks to make the product match more closely to Windows for the benefit of users unfamiliar with Linux."

sunw == msft

If you avoid msft because you don't like msft's business practices, then you might want to avoid sunw as well.

Sunw's involvement with scox has been absolutely disgraceful. Not only has sunw funded the msft/scox attack on OSS, but sunw can't stop squealing lies about sunw having the only legal version of linux. McNeally often parrots McBride's comments word for word. I used to like sunw, but not anymore.

There are plenty of other versions of linux around, and the other versions won't cost $100 a pop either. Don't support the company that supports scox.

I totally agree with walterbyrd. I have started to hate SUN.

Hey now, easy does it you guys. Sun has contributed plenty of good things to our industry, more than enough to outweigh the so-called wrongdoings of their SCO deal.

In addition to numerous technical contributions over the years, politically Sun has stepped up to the plate and gone toe-to-toe with Microsoft. All while every other hardware vendor bends over and sells win32 boxes.

neeh, It's just SUN's business position. If they had a Windows port on theyr PowerPCs and
wouldn't have tehir own operation system's department(Linux, Solaris, etc, whatever they use next), then they wouldn't care a thing about what's good or wrong. Isn't management basically the same everywhere(OK, let's exclude SCOX and M$ from the list for the moment), just plain bussiness(wo)men who aren't capable of seeing the results of their decisions from NONMONETARY point of view??

Sun and SCOX

Solaris *is* based on SCOX's property, so paying SCOX licence fees is not unreasonable. I have not heard any "only legal version of linux" from SUN, although I would not put it past SCOX to put that sort of thing into SUN's mouth.

Having used solaris it seems to be a good quality product and has a very big market share, so compatibility with it matters. So far it is been the subject of fewer security advisories than any linux distribution, although that could be due to the vulnerable software not being included.

The vibes I got are than Solaris scales to heaps of processors much better than linux.
