There is one way that is pretty reliable to give estimates of user OS... Google searches. Google tracks the user's operating system when a search is executed. I am almost 90% sure of this. :-)

Here is the Google Zuitgeist (stats) page.

Saddly, linux was 1% for September 2003, while the sum of the various Windows versions was 91%.
