LOL I run a fansite (nothing to do with linux) and according to our web server stats, linux users account for 56% of the hits on the site - just to put things in perspective...

I did a quick informal check on one of our archived access_logs for yesterday.

wc -l access_log.1
4193831

grep -c MSIE access_log.1
4007633

grep -i linux access_log.1
5472

Now I knoe that this is not very exact, and it only reflects raw hits and not unique
visitors, but it's still a sad thing.

But accounting that the majority of Linux deploiments, because of entreprise acceptance and the typical tech aware linux user, are most probably behind a firewall with NAT,... how can you be sure of the quantity of -"single machines"- connected to those gateways ?

The majority of windows users are not behind no proper security because they were educated to be sheep ready to be sheared... so the propotion most probabily is not correct.

And not to mention, most probabily (i dont know, i've to check), that modules like LSM and grsecurity have mechanisms to prevent OS fingerprinting...

Better, those routers with HUB + NAT so populer among small medium users and entreprises do not account as a Linux box ( even if they are running a derivative Linux code), do they ?

I'm currently working for an ISP, and we're getting about 1% of our hits from Linux systems.

If it's any comfort, that's about 3 times as many as OS/2... :-|
