Okay check this out. Microsoft Operating Systems / Office Suites are installed on a known quantity of big name boxes right? And they know how many white box copies of Winderz eXPee or whatnot they sell, and they know how much retail they do. They also assume, let's say 25% installed base pirated just for good measure. Linux, gets downloaded by user A, user A is a good, law abiding citizen who doesn't want to pirate software, so he burns 10 copies off and gives it to his friends, who in turn burn 10 copies off, and so on and so on like the old shampoo ad on TV. How many copies of Linux get registered anywhere? Chances are 10% of machines installed are actually counted somewhere like Linux Counter, or from the distribution. So how do we count? Web trackers? Well I can tell you if that's the case, according to my web server Linux + Mozilla has a 90+ percent installed base. And who can argue those numbers right?
So to boil it down to basics, the big boys are going to brag their numbers up and trash talk the competition down. So what? In the mean time I STILL don't have the monthly major virus outbreaks. And forget software license tracking...
