The situation for 2.6 is a little bit different to that for 2.4 though because of Andrew Morton's -mm tree.

Andrew seems to use -mm as a test bed for the 2.6 release.. so patches for 2.6 have already have had some testing in -mm prior to reaching 2.6 proper. There are a lot of the features already in 2.6-mm that will find their way in to 2.6.{1,2,3..} already.

Not sure if this is good, bad - but it is certainly different.

2.4 had the same with the ac tree (alan cox) - it was really good with testing new fixes and stuff. For a long time it was more stable than the 2.4 releases :)

Alan Cox wasn't the maintainer for 2.4. That's the difference. A significant one.
