Karen Sandler joins Conservancy's Management Team
Bradley M. Kuhn, outgoing Executive Director, gratefully passes the torch to his long-time colleague Karen Sandler. While Kuhn's work as Conservancy's President and on its Board of Directors remain unchanged, Kuhn's new full-time staff role is titled “Distinguished Technologist”."
GNOME News announces
Karen's departure as GNOME Foundation Executive Director. "Though Karen will no longer be the GNOME Foundation Executive Director, she will still be a part of the GNOME project. She has announced her intention to run for the Board of Directors, and wrote “I will stay on as pro bono counsel, and of course I’ll continue volunteering in other ways.”

I believe that "neutral harbors" like SFC/Apache/etc. are a critical foundation for the long term stability of FLOSS projects. There have been several notable examples in just the last year of projects fragmenting due to squabbles over trademarks, domain names, etc. that could have been avoided completely had the project been under the umbrella of a non-profit foundation.
I worry about the long term future of several large/popular open source applications that are driven by a single for-profit entity that owns all of the assets. I think that we (as a community) need to start a dialog as to whether being "open source" is enough for the community at large to start investing in a primarily single [corporate] entity driven application or if there needs to be a social norm towards a non-profit foundation holding key "organizing" assets such as trademarks and domain names.
Karen blogged about leaving GNOME Foundation for Conservancy, and I also blogged about my reasons for seeking this transition.
