Sun Strikes Huge Linux Desktop Deal With China (TechWeb)
TechWeb reports on Sun's deal with the China Standard Software Company (CSSC) which, it seems, will lead to the deployment of its Linux-based "Java Desktop System" on a million systems.
"The licensing agreement, which will start at the end of this year, allows the
CSSC to deliver its own branded products using the Java Desktop System as the
foundation for a nation-wide standard."

Unlike Java, it cannot be downloaded for free. It's something one cannot do without having Sun involved. And it's also more important for the end users than Java.
Star Office Posted Nov 18, 2003 17:14 UTC (Tue) by XERC (guest, #14626) [Link] When I first hearded the term "Sun Java Desktop", that I thought, thatit's something, what is totally based on Java and that the programming model for this desktop's user is also based on Java, for instance, that I could take a window of one program and stick it somehow in to my own Java program. It could have been an intereasting system from computer-sciense's point of view, but.... well, as I have heared from the lwn.net postings, I was daydreaming... Where did they take such a misleading phrase for their product???

The so called "Java Desktop System" is most likely a compromise between those who want to move ahead with embracing Linux/GNU and those who keep on thinking that the proprietary Solaris OS is still the way to go.

I think that tey should ship it as an alternative to Gnome, not to mention, it would be appropreate for them to finance the JD4X project.
