lm, you're confusing the issue, which makes it hard to respond to, but I'll try anyway because this issue is important.
You compare Free Software to commercial software, but these things are not exclusive, there is a lot of commercial Free Software. The MySQL database is one great example. The GNU Arch revision control system is another. If people want support or new features in GNU Arch, they can pay the highly talented Tom Lord for these things:
The GNU Arch Commercial offerings page
If you are trying to copy BK, give it up. We'll simply follow in the
footsteps of every other company faced with this sort of thing and change
the protocol every 6 months. Since you would be chasing us you can never
catch up. If you managed to stay close then we'd put digital signatures
into the protocol to prevent your clone from interoperating with BK. -- Larry McVoy, LKML
I wouldn't use software that is afraid of competition, specifically I would steer well clear of software that uses file-format lock-in to keep it's userbase. GNU Arch obviously doesn't create this problem, and it has a user community and plenty of Free documentation as a bonus.
