I almost certainly posted on Usenet about it, so unless DejaGoo has melted all the way into slag, you could look it up. :-) I'm not sure it'll be easy to do: back then it could have been obscure piece of information, but today you can find hundred of messages and pages which mention “magic mode”. It's even in the FAQ!
