Google attributes that quote, with relatively good confidence, to ex-Obama CoS Rahm Emmanuel, which I am more inclined to believe.
And I personally have no problem with the underlying view, either; you uses what you can gets. :-)
Jake: you're staff, are you not? LWN is *supposed* to pay for you to attend such things; I shouldn't think you need to 'disclose' it...

I am indeed on the staff. When we started doing the disclosures, we figured we would go ahead and thank subscribers as well when they are footing the bill. iirc, there was an article without a disclosure at one point that someone asked about, so it heads off that question too ...

As a matter of history I believe that quote is a bit older and should be attributed to Winston Churchill, although it was referenced more recently by Rahm Emmanuel causing a minor scandal which is why Google associates it so strongly.
