Announcements
Brief items
Michael Meeks announces
that SUSE's LibreOffice team is moving over to Collabora, which will be
providing commercial LibreOffice support going forward. " It seems to
me that the ability to say 'no' to profitable but peripheral business in
order to strategically focus the company is a really important management
task. In the final analysis I'm convinced that this is the right business
decision for SUSE. It will allow Collabora's Productivity division to focus
exclusively on driving LibreOffice into Windows, Mac and Consulting markets
that are peripheral to SUSE. It will also retain the core of the existing
skill base for the benefit of SUSE's customers, and the wider LibreOffice
community, of which openSUSE is an important part." See also the
press releases from Collabora
and SUSE.

The Free Software Foundation has launched the Free JavaScript campaign.
" For some time now, free software users have been concerned about the
increasing number of Web sites that cannot run without nonfree
JavaScript programs downloaded and executed on the visitor's
computer. Richard Stallman first raised the concern with his article
The JavaScript Trap, pointing out that most JavaScript programs
are not freely licensed, and that even free software Web browsers are
usually configured to download and run these nonfree programs without
informing the user. We've recently started organizing free software
users around the issue."

Simon Phipps looks
at Microsoft's Nokia acquisition with an emphasis on Nokia's patents.
" By divesting its devices business yet retaining ownership of the
patents that relate to them, Nokia has immunized itself from retaliatory
action when it makes future patent offensives. In the past, a company such
as Google -- most likely Nokia's primary target -- could retaliate by
attacking Nokia's infringement of its own patents, but that line of defense
is no longer available since all the products now belong to
Microsoft. That's the background to Nokia's statement that it 'plans to
continue to build Nokia's patent portfolio [and] to expand its
industry-leading technology licensing program.'"

Luis Villa has posted a set
of notes from the Creative Commons Global Summit. " Conversation
around the revised CC 4.0 license drafts was mostly quite positive. The
primary expressed concerns were about fragmentation and
cross-jurisdictional compatibility. I understand these concerns better now,
having engaged in several good discussions about them with folks at the
conference. That said, I came away only confirmed on my core position on
CC’s license drafting: when in doubt, CC should always err on the side of
creating a global license and enabling low-complexity sharing."

The KDE community is looking for a
host for Akademy 2014. " Hosting Akademy is a rare opportunity. The local hosting team plays a key and highly visible role in producing this event, being actively involved within the KDE community and with the local community as well. The hosting community gains financially with attendees visiting from all over the world. In addition, the local community can benefit from the value of Free and Open Source Software and the close involvement of one of its premier organizations. People from local businesses, educators, students, government officials and technology enthusiasts are encouraged to attend and are warmly welcomed. As has been proven by previous Akademies, the opportunity is as big and varied as the hosting team can create."
