FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRENTICE HALL PTR ANNOUNCES THE PUBLICATION OF THE OFFICIAL BOOK GUIDE TO
SAMBA-3
Samba-Team Co-Founder John H. Terpstra Co-Edits the First Book on Samba-3
Upper Saddle River, NJ (November 3, 2003) - Prentice Hall PTR, the leading
publisher of advanced technology books, announces the publication of, The
Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide, (ISBN 0131453556), as the first
book written for the newest Samba code release, Samba-3.0.0. The book is
written through a collaboration among the core developers of the Samba-Team
and expert end-users, with Samba-Team Co-Founder John H. Terpstra as one of
the book's lead editors.
The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide, part of the Prentice Hall
PTR Bruce Perens' Open Source Series, is the definitive book for all Samba
administrators, with special attention given to Windows administrators
migrating to Samba. The book exists as a comprehensive compilation of
critical questions and answers that have been cultivated from Samba mailing
lists, as well as new information written exclusively for the book, such as
the chapter titled "FastStart: Cure for the Impatient", which presents
several examples of total system configurations.
"We've gone over a mountain of questions that real-world users have raised
and in this book, have posed both the questions and provided the answers
that solve their problems in the 'Common Errors' section included within
each chapter," Terpstra said.
The book includes extensive coverage of features new to Samba-3. As its
approach, the book opens with a basic installation guide, including user
policies, desktop profiles and server configuration, and then progresses to
cover advanced installation and configuration guidelines.
"The sheer volume of different types of documentation [on Samba] has proved
difficult to navigate, thus reducing its value to system administrators, as
they try to cope with the complexity," said Andrew Tridgell, President of
the Samba-Team.
"This book gathers together that wealth of information into a much more
accessible form, to allow system administrators to quickly find what they
need. The breadth of technical information provided ensures that even the
most demanding of administrators will find something they need," he said.
Co-Editor John Terpstra is a co-founder of the Samba-Team. He is heavily
involved in creating the strategy behind Samba. He plays a central role in
answering user questions and writing the resulting documentation. He is
also a full-time consultant providing business process and mentoring
services. Co-Editor Jelmer Vernooij is author of the multiple password
backend technology in Samba-3 and has made many contributions to the Samba
project.
The Prentice Hall PTR Bruce Perens' Open Source Series, edited by open
source evangelist and developer Bruce Perens, publishes books focused on
Linux and open source technologies, including new and emerging
technologies. Each book in the Series is published under the Open
Publication License, an open source-compatible book license. Concurrent
with the OPL, the contents of The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference
Guide will be released to the public several months after the book's
November, 2003 publication date.
