Calibre 1.0 released

Version 1.0 of the Calibre electronic book management system has been released. "Lots of new features have been added to calibre in the last year — a grid view of book covers, a new, faster database backend, the ability to convert Microsoft Word files, tools to make changes to ebooks without needing to do a full conversion, full support for font embedding and subsetting, and many more."

While this seems to be a big one-oh, Calibre refers to this as "ten" in the URL to the change notes. ??

In 2011, in a review of Calibre 0.8.16, our editor wrote:
"The Kindle, incidentally, will eventually be replaced with a more open device; selecting that device is likely to be the topic of a future article."

Does anyone know if that "future article" was ever posted (a search of lwn didn't find it, but it didn't find that previous article either)?

Replacement device

I used a Sony PRS-T1 for a bit - a nice device, though not necessarily more open. Anymore, though, I find I just haul the N7 tablet and use that. There are plenty of free reader programs for Android, and CyanogenMod makes for a mostly free OS. I'm going to be hauling the tablet anyway, so it's getting increasingly hard to throw a dedicated reader device into the bag as well.

Replacement device

I had a PRS-T1, but was incredibly frustrated by the bugs I encountered all the time. And when I had filled up the device half-way through, with maybe a thousand books it got awfully slow... I've got a Kobo Aura HD now, with a nice big screen, a responsive Qt-based gui -- and it really feels as if it's made for someone who reads a lot, like several hours a day.

On the other hand, my nexus 7 usually never leaves my travel bag, not when I am on the road, not when I get home. For me, it doesn't seem to work as a reading device, and it doesn't really seem to work as an internet device.
