I watched the Why Debian should or should not make systemd the default (544MB!). Quite good overview and honest about "why not to use it". Also a concrete shout welcoming Debian specifying and getting involved in the design (development or sharing the needs/wishes). Currently watching the Upstart talk, though I am biased against it.

The ogv for Upstart doesn't play properly on SL6...

If it were mp4 I guess I can go with Fluendo...

As a data-point, it played well on F19 64bit in Chrome.

I also watched the upstart video to see what they had to say. I also watched Lennart's video on systemd. My opinion is that systemd configuration is not only simpler looking and much more powerful, support for cgroups, but that the dependency based approach of systemd is the right way to go. Let the system figure out what to do.

I also had a tough time following the upstart presentation and while I've seen how nice systemd configuration files look it didn't seem like upstart had half as many useful features.

I've finished watching the upstart presentation (using MPlayer). I quite liked the way of presenting, it makes you want to go and play with Upstart. Further, they made it clear that they know Debian really well by giving some references towards things they want to handle differently and better.

Being more critical, the answer towards CLA was really poor. Further more, it seems that systemd does way more and in a more proper way. Being simple is not a benefit if it is not done right. E.g. giving an example of wanting to do something after a mount, but Upstart not supporting that atm (think technically it could), means that at the moment you have to put an ugly 5 second sleep in the script. Pretty terrible IMO, especially as there is no way to properly do that atm. Lastly, they mentioned nothing about FreeBSD and Hurd support (IIRC Upstart is also Linux-only).

The audio problems at the beginning was annoying btw.

I've found both presentations easy to follow. They differed in style&focus, but made a good case for their point.

Nice thing about the systemd talk: he also highlighted the biggest show stoppers (though I personally found his constant upstart-bashing a little off-putting).

About the features-disparity: since systemd is also contains a log service, inetd replacement, and login service, I'd expect systemd to have some more features that upstart…

Try VLC.

There are high-quality h.264 streams available, which are also more widely supported. In the future, we hope to have WebM streams, and I suspect we'll publish WebM transcoding of the DebConf13 video, when someone writes the code to do it...
