Yeah. Fedora (Cronie) has already done that. People in the mailing list are still arguing that they prefer cron output to syslog.

Then they can install an MTA themselves, but the syslog support eliminates the argument that the output will disappear into /dev/null without an MTA>

Yes indeed. Cronie gained this feature as part of a previous effort to remove the MTA from default.
