The Free Software Foundation Europe has sent an
open
letter to Estonia's National Electoral Committee (NEC) regarding the
country's Internet voting system. "
Estonia has used Internet voting
for general elections since 2005. Unfortunately, the system's technology
remains proprietary. Local activists have recently managed to convince the
NEC to release source code for some of the software under a non-free
licence, but this licence does not permit distribution of derivative works
or commercial use. These arbitrary restrictions on software developed with
public funds hinder security research."

Calls for Presentations
PyConZA will take place October 3-4 in Cape Town, South Africa. The call
for speakers is open until September 1. "
The presentation slots will
be 30 minutes long, with an additional 10 minutes for discussion at the
end. Shared sessions are also possible. The presentations will be in English."

Linux Plumbers Conference (LPC) will take place September 18-20 in New
Orleans, Louisiana. There will be an
opening
plenary session after which attendees are invited to attend the
LinuxCon keynotes. LPC is co-located with LinuxCon NA and the
refereed
track talks will be shared by the two events.
