... which is the default sendmail replacement on Gentoo for some time :)

And at least one BSD did so too -- Dragonfly BSD wrote their own local MTA, dma (also ported to many linux distros). OpenBSD too plans to replace sendmail with their own program (opensmtpd). Given sendmail's close links to BSD, it is amusing that Fedora is more conservative than some BSDs in this respect...

I missed the email thread, but it does seem curious that they didn't propose moving to a "slimmer" default MTA instead of just ripping it out altogether.

...or maybe someone did and it got shot down.

There were several proposals for that but Lennart was not interested in anything but complete removal.

Thanks! I've been using ssmtp since 2002 when I switched to mutt. I immediately thought of it reading the article.

To be fair, ssmtp is aimed at a particular user story that overlaps the Fedora situation, but is not an exact fit.

I got the impression, for some reason, that ssmtp was mostly abandoned and that msmtp was it's modern replacement. Are you still maintaining ssmtp? AFAIK, Gentoo has switched its default MTA away from ssmtp to msmtp.
