One day I'll quit my job and write a psychological study on why tech journalists love stock Android.
Not a tech journalist, but I can say why I like stock Android:
Faster updates. I'm already running 4.3 on my Nexus 10.
Less uninstallable junkware. I'd be a lot happier with the manufacturer customized versions if I could get rid of stuff I don't use. Of course, I'd be happier with the Google stock version if I could get rid of some of the Google apps I don't use, too.

Seriously, all the new fads about UI (starting from calling them UX) seems that are though to make for example multi-windows HW or SW design a pain in the back. Windows maximizing themselves, click to focus, forced global menus... ykes. You end with a 27" display and able to interact with just one app at a time.
Or install fvwm2, really.
