Review: SUSE 9 Professional (UnixReview.com)

UnixReview has a review of the preview release of SUSE Linux 9 Professional. "Because SUSE 9 is a major version jump (from 8.2 to 9.0), I expected the release to be significantly different from its predecessor. It definitely has some improvements, but it seems like more of a point release than a major jump. SUSE 9.0 is a modest upgrade from SUSE 8.2. There are a number of improvements, but it's not the major leap that many Linux users may be used to. The additional YaST modules may be the best reason for upgrading."

Fabulous review! Although I must say, the mention of certain bugs makes ma a bit
uncomfortable. SuSE's graphics configuration was never painfree for me, and I could never
understand why. So, this seems to me more like an ongoing story than a surprise.

There is one good reason to upgrade, I suppose, and that is their (stable) kernel version ...
2.4.20 was old for 8.2, and I do hope that some of the latest Intel network adapters are now
supported.

Imagine my embarrassment when I installed a brand new computer for a brand new SuSE
user with the brand new SuSE 8.2, of all things the network adapter doesn't work, and their
much-hyped installation support tells me that network cards are not a core feature of a
computer and are hence not supported. Yes, they do say that for the server-style
distribution ("professional"). Ouch.

Yes, I know we should have tried Debian. Yes, I know we might have compiled 2.4.21. But, I
suppose installing an old NIC was just simpler ...

thanks!

V.
