Cool, so the vision of free software is that multiple competing for-profit entities contribute to a same project and sell proprietary forks separately?
I would say that the vision is that many different people and groups will become contributors to the project. That is more likely to happen if all contributors have equal rights to the code, either no right to make proprietary versions (e.g. GPL licensed software without copyright assignment) or everyone has the right (e.g. MIT or Apache licensed software). When one developer sets itself up with special rights to spin off proprietary versions, that discourages commercial competitors from participating, reducing the pool of potential contributors.
