That did grate rather.
But one has to make allowances for Americans, even ones as well-adjusted as our esteemed editor.

Of course some USians (for that is what I assume you meant, I'd guess "Americans" in general are far more used to non-personal-automobile transit than the average USian) took pause at that parenthetical as well... While public transit isn't as widespread or as commonly used and therefore generally assumed useful in the US as it tends to be in many other nations, it's certainly there in the larger cities, and many people do depend on it, to the extent of no longer having a personal automobile, finding renting more cost effective for that rare occasion, or even no longer having a(n unexpired) driver's license.
