Or, to put it another way, for Fedora 18, Fedora got a lot of publicity for being late to release. The project was able to say, quite reasonably, "The installer has undergone a major rewrite, and we want to make sure all the problems are ironed out first." For Fedora 19 do we want to say, "We're late to release because we wanted to put an 'ö' in the release name."?

No, probably not, and I am not advocating for delaying the release because of this issue but this is a really silly problem to have and there is probably a lot of benefit to tracking down and fixing the underlying reasons this problem exists in the first place.

Agreed - are multiple languages and their character sets and handling thereof really considered optional by developers of an internationally received distro?

Seems a bit parochial to me and I'm British ...

It's not like this is even an unusual unusual character. It's not Cyrillic or Chinese or Indian or some other character set used by half the world's population. No, it's boring old Latin-1.

(Also: if you can't handle Erwin Schrödinger's name, surely there are a lot of other people whose names you can't handle?)

Names are the worst. Whatever you are doing to handle them is always going to be wrong for someone, there are as many human naming conventions as cultures, many of them highly incompatible.
