There is a Debian Mint and several others I'll get wrong if I try to list them. Mint can be created from many different distributions. My guess would be Mint will simply migrate to Debian or another base.

The future is already here! Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is alive and well and available for download in two different flavorshere.

The Linux Mint developers have already forked Gnome Shell (and a few other things), so I wouldn't be too surprised if they did the same with Mir, although it would probably be a much more difficult job. Or maybe they will use Wayland instead. Or re-base on Debian, as you say. They have options.
