One wonders whether it's really a good idea to name it after a space station that the Russians abandoned and allowed to burn up once they decided that going it alone on something as complex and expensive as a space station wasn't really practical.

Mir was designed for a lifespan of 5-7 years, yet it lasted 15. If anything, it was an enormous success.

AND the ISS is basically a clone of Mir with more bells and whistles ;) So while Mir is gone, its legacy lives on.

It was an incredible achievement that placed them ahead of everyone else in the space race, when the URSS was the underdog. Perhaps it is metaphorical after all... even if Shuttleworth wants it to kickstart an IIS project where there is more international collaboration.

Mir is also Russian for "peace" (Voina e Mir) and "the world".
