The problem I have with all these build systems is that they intentionally go out of the way to be incompatible. I dont *want* a build system that makes all sorts of assumptions about what file extensions mean. I turn off that stuff in GNU make. I want my build description to be explicit.
There's absolutely no reason the enhancements provided by tup couldn't be incorporated into GNU make. It's a different update algorithm, yes, but from the user's point of view the Makefile should still work.

So much for the theory. And then there is the problem that the implementation is barely more than a research project for now.
