Linux on the traditional desktop is about where Windows is on phones. Microsoft will keep Windows on phones by throwing boatloads of money at it because it can't afford to lose face, but it will remain a niche player. Linux will survive on the desktop because a sufficient number of people can see its clear advantages. No boatloads of money will be required.
