You obviously don't understand: the Perl 6 energy _is_ spent on improving Perl 5. Perl 6 is the best thing that could have happened to Perl 5. It's probably the reason why Perl 5 is still thriving and growing.
Perl 5 developers have used the experience and ideas from the Perl 6 development to improve Perl 5. There has been a very healthy back and forth between those two languages. And even if Perl 6 would have never been used in any real life program, the whole effort would already have paid off. But on top of that, Perl 6 is a very nice language on it's own and becoming more and more useful and used.
