OpenPlans: EveryBlock and OpenBlock (and something new)

The OpenPlans blog reports on the abrupt shutdown of EveryBlock, a popular "hyperlocal" news site run by NBC (and which was initially based on open source code). "What we lost today was a powerful (closed) engine for gathering data from many different sources and making sense of it," OpenPlans says, adding that it hopes the EveryBlock shutdown will reignite interest in the open source fork of the original codebase, OpenBlock. Others have commented on the sudden shutdown as well, including Mozilla OpenNews, which said the site "exemplified new approaches" to journalism.

NBC and the rest of major USA "news networks" are all ran by asshats with deep politic ties to government and financial obligations to most large American corporations. Never trust anything they say or do.

Why stop at that?

Yes, and furthermore: we know since the Council of Carthage that people are tricked by their inner demons into the works of the Evil One. Never trust anything they say or do.

Well I suppose if you want to be a ass about it, then there is a element of truth to that.

But mostly I was referring to the fact that NBC and other large media folks will be working against you to kill off free media and is diligently working with various governmental agencies to subtly change copyright rules to make it impossible to produce a news organization without massive financial backing and legal protections. I am sure that a significant number of people pored a large amount of time into "EverBlock" only to have the rug pulled out from underneath them. This is the sort of behavior you can expect from these types of organizations and it is only going to get worse as they are gradually marginalized.

So that is why I say 'do not trust anything they do, do not believe anything they say', because they are most certainly not on your side.

Oh and if you want any proof of that just examine the language of various international treaties floating around with claims of copyright being a human right. Also there is fun stuff going on in Europe right now with government folks figuring out how to use EU money to prop up the kind of news organizations that they favor.
